How to Foil Decorate a Cotton Garment with an Inkjet Sublimation Printer

One of the most "seismic" events to shake the world of inkjet sublimation has been the invention of self-weeding t-shirt transfer papers that can capture the vibrancy of sublimation and bond it to natural fabrics, such 100% cotton!

Products like Subli-Light (No-Cut), Subli-Light GLITTER (No-Cut) and Subli-DARK GLITTER (No-Cut) from Forever Paper GmbH allow inkjet sublimation users to apply full-color designs to cotton and cotton/polyester fabrics without the excess emulsion residue normally associated with typical inkjet iron-on transfers. Also, these products do not require a vinyl cutter, saving you time and labor. Click here to view the full Subli-Light catalog we carry.

Now, Forever Paper has introduced Subli-Finishing Adhesive Foil, which applies an adhesive emulsion over Forever's sublimation-to-cotton products and allows hot stamping foil to stick. With a few extra steps, inkjet sublimation users can foil decorate a cotton shirt in dozens of available colors and patterns!

Instructions

Subli-Finishing Adhesive Foil
Items inkjet sublimators need to foil a design:
1. FOREVER Subli-Light (No-Cut) Transfer Paper
2. FOREVER Subli-Finishing Adhesive Foil
3. Roll of Hot Stamping Foil
4. Silicone Finishing Paper

Step 1. Create your design as "Stencil Art" and print to FOREVER Subli-Light (No-Cut) Transfer Paper.
For the best weeding results, create your design as "200% coverage" within a CMYK profile of your design software. For instance, make your color 100(K) and 100(C) so your printer uses enough ink to properly activate the FOREVER Subli-Light (No-Cut) Transfer Paper. Also, if you use a Sawgrass system, make sure to select the FOREVER Paper option in VPM.

Step 2. Apply the FOREVER Subli-Light (No-Cut) Transfer Paper to your garment with a commercial heat press.
The design now becomes the "target" where the hot stamping foil will stick. To aid this process, use the FOREVER Subli-Finishing Adhesive Foil over your design to add the adhesive tack. The FOREVER Subli-Finishing Adhesive Foil only takes 10 seconds to apply over your printed design.

Step 3. You are ready to foil.
Cut a piece large enough to cover your design, or use different foils colors for added effect. Lay the foil over the prepped design "metal side up" and heat apply with a commercial heat press.

NOTE: Use heavy pressure when applying the hot stamping foil to your transfer. After heating, allow the shirt and hot stamping foil to cool before removing. To increase the durability of the design, cover the foiled image with a silicone sheet and perform a finishing press.

We hope you enjoy creating hot stamping foil designs with your inkjet sublimation system. For more details, visit our website or view a foil design tutorial video.
